Articles and Publications
I write the occasional article relating to various aspects of establishing a Web presence. Some of these have been published, but most were originally written to answer a need of a client. Below are links to some relevant and (more or less) recent articles of general interest:
- Floats, Margins and IE (this link will take you to another site! January, 2004): Microsoft's Internet Explorer is notorious for it's rendering bugs. I recently discovered a new one and in the course of investigating it found a really simple fix for an old, and very annoying, one. This article is for you inner geek.
- You Are Here (January, 2004): Presents a simple JavaScript solution for highlighting the current page on a navigation list.
- Building Web Site Credibility (January, 2004): a summary of recommendations from the Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab on how to avoid design pitfalls that compromise your credibility.
- Content Guidelines: Writing Web Copy for High Search Engine Rankings: a very brief introduction to writing Web copy to improve your chances or ranking high in the search engines. This assumes you know the basic elements of an html page, but is not geared to the specialist.
- Link Popularity Made Simple (Sort Of): a simple description of how a link popularity algorithm ranks the importance of Web pages, based on Google's PageRank system. This is lengthy and requires a basic knowledge of high school algebra. Originally published by Audette Media (www.adventive.com).
- SEO Business Case Analysis: compares the ROI for a typical Search Engine Optimization project with a banner ad campaign. It's getting old and a little dated, but the basic principles are sound and it is full of "typical" traffic statistics.
